Our Master of Public Health (MPH) program offers a diverse group of working adult students who bring valuable workforce skills to enhance your business practices. Collaborate with our MPH student-consultant teams (or individuals) who possess advanced knowledge across the specializations of Health Promotion, Community Mental Health, and Healthcare Administration, where they will work remotely on a main project or smaller initiatives for 8-12 weeks. With a focus on leadership, strategic planning, and public health principles, our MPH students will connect with your project coordinator through virtual communication tools. Harness the potential of our talented students to accomplish significant projects during the practicum placement. This invaluable experience not only enriches your organization's resources, but also cultivates students' confidence and professional skills. For their practicum placement, NU MPH students are required to upload 2 forms of evidence of attainment of their chosen MPH Foundational Competencies. Explore a wide range of non-clinical public health deliverables, including:

  • Comprehensive reports presenting primary and secondary findings, research data, analysis, and actionable insights.
  • Research findings and recommendations tailored to user, consumer, and stakeholder groups.
  • Engaging and impactful content creation, along with practical suggestions for implementation.
  • Generation of innovative ideas and best practices to drive positive outcomes.

Project Examples

Students can complete a substantial project for your organization over the placement period. The practicum placement, which is intended to contribute to an organization’s resources while developing the confidence and professional skills of the student, can include non-clinical projects that focus on Public Health areas such as:

Disease Control Initiative:

  • Analyze current disease control measures and recommend improvements.
  • Develop protocols and guidelines for preventing the spread of diseases.
  • Create educational materials on disease prevention for targeted populations.

Health Program Planning:

  • Conduct needs assessments to identify community health needs.
  • Develop comprehensive program plans with clear goals and activities.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to implement and monitor health programs.

Community Engagement Campaign:

  • Create compelling health promotion campaigns for specific communities.
  • Develop communication materials to raise awareness and engage the public.
  • Organize community events and workshops to educate and involve participants.

Public Health Data Management:

  • Establish data collection protocols and systems for public health initiatives.
  • Analyze public health data using statistical methods to derive insights.
  • Develop data visualization tools to effectively communicate findings.

Evidence-based Interventions Review:

  • Conduct systematic literature reviews on public health interventions.

Collaborate with our Master of Public Health (MPH) student-consultants on these projects to achieve impactful outcomes and drive positive change in the field of public health. The assigned project(s) will allow the student to develop various MPH Foundational Competencies by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) for public health professionals as identified at: https://media.ceph.org/documents/D2_guidance.pdf


Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Be available for a quick pre-selection phone call/zoom meeting with the program coordinator to initiate your relationship and confirm that the project scope is an appropriate fit. Your initial meeting with the student team introduces the company and project's scope, answers students' questions regarding the project, and outlines the expected communication schedule.

Conduct weekly meetings with the students until the project end date. Provide supportive feedback and analysis to students about their project's outcomes and quality. Advise where possible throughout the project and provide appropriate mentorship to ensure students align with company goals and outcomes.

The supervisor working with our graduate students serves in the role of a student mentor and is required to complete an NU MPH Preceptor Agreement. The preceptor will be a dedicated contact who is available to answer emails for the duration of the project to address students' questions. Preceptor qualifications include a Master’s Degree or comparable level of education in the public health field, or in a field related to the area of primary mentoring responsibility. A preceptor is required to have a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience.

Please note that this is an 8 week program (with some flexibility to extend to 12 weeks), so your project scope and expected deliverables should align with this time frame (please see dates in milestones).
