Learner goals and capabilities

We invite your company to collaborate with our engineering students on an exciting project in the Fall semester. This initiative fosters practical learning for our students and provides your organization with fresh perspectives and innovative solutions.

In this class, first year students explore the Engineering design process and develop their ability to use engineering communication tools through individual exercises, labs and a group projects. Working in teams, they examine the technical background of a well-defined problem and use engineering drawing and CAD to design potential solutions.

Project Details:

  • Project Commitment: October 7th & November 25th, 2024. The client will need to attend these days from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm on the Langara campus or virtually. Project presentations are on November 27th but attending this is optional for the client.
  • Optional Collaboration: Should the students and your organization find mutual interest, there is an opportunity for further collaboration on product design. This is entirely at the discretion of both parties.

Why Partner with Us? Our students are eager to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical setting under your guidance. By participating in this project, you contribute to their professional growth while benefiting from their creativity and dedication.

Project Examples

Each student team will create a 3D model of their solution to the proposed problem in SolidWorks, then manufacture a prototype (using equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, etc.) in our Makerspace.

In the last few years, students worked on projects that served accessibility needs. Some examples are:

  • a cupholder that can be attached to a wheelchair
  • a collapsible cupholder that can be attached to a crutch
  • a 3D-printed protective cover for a wheelchair control unit. The cover needed to be impact and water-resistant.

Here is one example: Enginnering-Cup-Holder-002.jpg

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Be available for a quick phone/virtual call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the experience.

Provide a dedicated contact person who is available for weekly/bi-weekly drop-ins to address learners’ questions as well as periodic messages over the duration of the project

How is your project relevant to the experience?
