The capstone course will incorporate skills such as research, messaging strategies, social media planning, crisis management planning, and more. Student teams will develop a comprehensive communication campaign based on research and client needs. The completed campaign will be presented to the client at the end of the course. All students compete in teams and the client will determine an overall team winner who best captured the client’s vision and solved their communications problem.

Ideally, the capstone client will have a global focus of some kind (ex. serves international audiences, offers products in several countries, solves global challenges, etc.).

Expected outcomes and deliverables

Student teams will complete a multi-faceted, semester-long project consisting of defining the client's communication problem and identifying strategic communication solutions. Specifically, the final presentation will include:

· Situation Analysis

· Target Audience Persona Analysis & Messaging Strategies

· Crisis Management Framework

· Press Kit

· Social Media Strategy

· Communication Strategy & Plan

· Measurement & Evaluation Analysis

Project Examples

This course is project-based, so all course deliverables will be assignments related to the overall communication campaign project.

Student teams will submit the following projects:

  • Situation Analysis

  • Crisis Management Framework
  • Press Kit
  • Social Media Strategy
  • Communication Strategy & Plan
  • Measurement & Evaluation Analysis

Example project niches include, but are not limited to:

  • Nonprofits.
  • Startups.
  • Service businesses.
  • International organizations.

The final project will consist of a digital campaign book and a presentation pitch to the client.

Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:

Watch the final student presentations and select a winning team.

Meet with students at the beginning of the semester to share information about the company and communication needs.

Be available for a quick phone call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.

Provide a dedicated contact who is available to answer periodic emails or phone calls over the duration of the project to address students' questions.
