design thinking communication research model development deployment and documentationAir conditioning refers to the thermal and environmental control of building interiors, while refrigeration refers to maintaining sub-ambient temperatures for food, vaccines, or other products. The purpose of this course is to enable students to specify and/or design such systems for application in residential, commercial, and industrial environments.

Project Examples
Requirements
In teams of 4 or 5, students will select an air conditioning/refrigeration technology or approach which can apply to buildings, manufacturing, transportation, or other applications requiring cooling. Each project will require an analysis of its energy consumption, electrical demand, installation cost, and an estimate of the CO2 emissions caused by this installation. If the system is replacing an existing system then an estimate of the energy, demand, and CO2 emissions savings will be generated.
For this project students can do one of the following:
• Conceive of a “new” air conditioning or refrigeration technology, and develop it further to the point where a technical and economic assessment of its potential can be made. This can be an entirely new concept, or one that students want to explore further.
• In a similar manner, conceive of a new installation or operation approach, such as an improved process to control an air conditioner or refrigerator, and analyze its potential to save energy, CO2, and money.
• Analyze the combined technical and economic implications of an air conditioning or refrigeration technology, such as the application of cost-effective cooling for agricultural produce in developing countries.
Additional company criteria
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:
A representative of the company will be available to answer questions from students in a timely manner for the duration of the project.
