Effective Onboarding in a Remote Workplace

We want to ensure that our new employees are completely prepared to tackle the world of consulting work for our customers. In the new world of fully remote or hybrid workplaces, how do we ensure our new team members have the tools and training they need to be successful and ensure long-term success? What do we need to change in our current onboarding process to account for knowledge transfer? Technical questions? On the job training? Remote working set-up and ergonomics? Ideally, our hybrid/remote onboarding process will uphold our company culture, accelerate the learning curve, and increase retention. Students should be prepared to: Research our existing onboarding practices to determine their effectiveness and opportunities for improvement. Research the hybrid working / remote onboarding practices of competitors. Research what hybrid working / remote onboarding components are most impactful for new employees. Develop a standardized onboarding plan that achieves our goals.

Sandalwood Engineering & Ergonomics Market Research Project

We would like to continue our growth and expansion with an investigation into offering a fully remote ergonomics service offering. We would like to understand what would be involved in implementing this new service offering for our customers, including researching and providing recommendations on the following: Structure of Program · What is needed to have in place i.e. software, hardware, skillset of those providing service · Process for assessment that outlines the benefits in time and cost not only for the steps related to the assessment but those related to completion of the assessments -- software use as a knowledge transfer tool to get the idea across and be more affective · Services need to be easy and less administrative to work with our current structure (i.e. use it to fill gaps in requests) Current Competitors · Subscription services – who is already currently offering these (competition), what is the price point Potential Pilot · Pilot capabilities – time to get in place – can we do this without software and what would process be with and without o Industry 4.0 tech should be our differentiator but not sure how to use it to engage new clients that do not have tech as part of regular activities Obstacles · Obstacles - cost of remote assistance software may not lend itself to a multicompany cost structure

Work experience

Director, People & Processes
Sandalwood Engineering & Ergonomics
Windsor, Ontario, Canada
September 2002 - Current

My 16+ year tenure at Sandalwood has given me a vast array of experience in supporting, executing and leading various initiatives across the company as well as for customers. As a young Electrical Engineer, I successfully integrated and deployed complex IT software solutions in many major manufacturing facilities throughout North America. This included writing and presenting quotes for new business, meeting with and managing vendors, managing project deliverables, writing and providing documentation on completed projects. Over the years, I honed and expanded my skills with a focus on successful and timely delivery of a wide variety of projects. My work was always completed on time and I was consistently ranked as a top performer.
As I advanced in my career and the company grew in size, I took on more responsibility and a process‐driven approach to developing and implementing sustainable corporate processes and systems, including fully documenting all sales, quoting, project delivery and project closure processes and procedures.
My work as Manager of Continuous Improvement pushed me to learn and develop, particularly in non‐Engineering related areas, like Human Resources and Marketing.
My curiosity allowed me to segue to a Director position with responsibility for all continuous improvement initiatives as well as human resources including recruiting
retention and onboarding, staff development, performance management, professional development, employee tools & bene its, marketing, communications, operations and leadership. Additionally, I successfully rolled out a streamlined Corporate Objectives dashboard for 2019 including key measures and metrics relating directly to Sandalwood’s core values.
I continue to learn and grow and accept new challenges willingly and with vigor.
